This weekend has been incredibly heartbreaking for all of us at The Silent Barn. On top of many issues that we’re currently dealing with, over the weekend our house was completely ransacked. About $15k worth of audio equipment, house projects and personal belongings are gone. The violence to the space is almost as upsetting as the theft. Doors were ripped off of hinges, furniture ripped to shreds, and everything in the space strewn about in a sea of debris. SATURDAY /SILENT BARN WERKSHOPPING. all day at silent barn there's going to be a ton of weird awesome diy workshops. it's like craft making for old ladies, but a little more intense. workshops include making incredible brightly colored cardboard props, re-purposing old electronics like childhood toys, the essentials of making an electric guitar, and something with circuit bending. it'll be totally worth the small donation & plus what better way do you have to spend the day until the next epic part of northside? and maybe you'll find the father of your next baby.

5. SATURDAY PT. My adventures in the realm of Strong Island DIY has been a slow and dry one, but recently some folks from a band called Rations organized a show at a local Hall for Veterans of War. The vibes were super chill and spirits were high while we all experienced punk with Long Island angst in a place where you'd never really expect it. Old photos of soldiers decorated walls with cards strung that children made from construction paper reading "thank you" like a colorful crown molding of American pride. There was also a record exchange of some sort that I had ignored, probably because I'm too broke. Here's a video of a band called Sister Kisser. I've heard of them before and I think I might've even seen them a while back, but they definitely left a mark after Saturday night. Super high energy and jams that bleed Long Island style.

It's been a while since I've posted anything, but I'm too busy getting the great American education that we all strive for. I wish I had some nudes or some bands for you, but all I've got is the incredibly well made debut issue of Shouting Shorelines, a new zine from Long Island, NY. It's really blowing my mind that this was produced straight out of the dry monotonous suburbs that I'm living and breathing in. The art is fantastic, the writing is great, and the layout is pretty sick. So I'm going to cut into the middle of my writing because in the drafting of this post, I've written what is probably pages, removed it and tried to shorten it, but just ended up writing more theoretical shit on grassroots organization and how it could really foster a community in a place when creativity and expression is almost non-existent. So here we go, I tried once again to write about the zine and I've failed. So instead, just read one of the very last pieces called Long Island Radical History in Context. It's insanely well written and pretty much fueled the word vomit I was experiencing prior to it's removal from this post. It's brilliant and beautiful and in my position as a young Long Islander, I lacked any knowledge of this experience. You should read it and become enlightened by the invisible history of our suburbs. Fucking brilliant. Too emotional right now.

2010 was pretty great year, especially since I started to really live the great American dream. Porn and music are pretty much the only reason the internet should exist or does exist, and why not have them both in one centralized place? Yupp, thank Rich Moms for that one. Not only will you find out about the new Myelin Sheaths record, but you can now jack off while listening to it. Pretty exciting advance on the part of the great people of America. Now we can celebrate by checking out some of the best full lengths of 2010. The following releases are so fucking perfect, that I tried to write 4u. I tried so hard. Kinda not in any order although Juan Wauters & Pill Wonder are number one.

Juan Wauters from Jackson Heights, New York.

This Is Uruguay Radio is probably the greatest thing released since Nickelback's Dark Horse LP. Most of the tracks are sweet love songs written by Juan Wauters of the Beets featuring Matt Vols, the staple artist of the Beets, in the background playing the piccolo, an added touch that makes a world of magic and brilliance. The lyrics are simple and charged with clever satire, but are tangled in a realm of complexities too difficult for the heart to conceive. It's all too brilliant to even write about or to even understand, but at the surface it's just catchy lo-fi pop music and that in itself is probably just enough.

Honestly, I can't even pretend to write about Jungle/Surf. It's too perfect to be described with bullshit words that I don't even understand. Jungle/Surf is just short of being twenty minutes, but feels like the most perfect and complete piece released in 2010. You can listen to a track here and there from all the other releases on this list, but Jungle/Surf is a record that cries to be enjoyed from start to finish. Can your record do that? Nah, son.

Tim Cohen from San Francisco, California.

Tim Cohen is one of the musical masterminds behind the Fresh & Onlys. Cohen's solo material is definitely a departure from the Fresh & Onlys, but it rules so much more. Laugh Tracks has endearing pop numbers that have funky Mexican feeling brass solos and bluesy harmonicas and tons of weird random shit that sounds fantastic. Tim Cohen, you rule.

Andrew Cedermark from Charlottesville, VA.

The first time I saw Andrew Cedermark was at Market Hotel where he played a set with lots of looping and the only merch he had for sale was a brown paper bag of home grown tomatoes and some demo tracks burnt onto a blank CD. Now he's playing shows with a full band and has a brilliant full length record that is probably one of the most wonderful things I've heard all year.

Oh man I was so excited when I realized these kids were releasing a full length. Gritty sugary punk jams, what could be better? I was kind of obsessed with their 7" from 2009 and the LP is nothing short of that. Every song on Get on Your Nerves is raw and awesome and I just want to make love to it, all of it.

The Feeling of Love from Paris, France.

It seems like Acid Baby Jesus was the gateway to a handful of amazing bands. The Feeling of Love toured with them around Greece a while back. OK Judge Revival is full of trippy psychedelic garage punk. Paris is really killing it with this shit.

White Fence from San Francisco, California.

White Fence is the project of Tim Presley, a dope artist and member of the Strange Boys. The White Fence LP is full of warped nostalgia that sounds like it could have been something extracted from the 60's. Every song is bedroom pop at it's best. Someone once told me that as a college radio music director, it's my job to come up with dumb genres like chill wave, so I've dubbed White Fence as hillbilly chime gaze hymns. I think that genre is kind of rad.

This band was the gateway to a better future, or at least better jams. Without Acid Baby Jesus, I probably wouldn't be into Crash Normal, The Feeling of Love, or my dearest BAZOOKA. If you haven't heard of this band yet, they've got a US release coming up soon and they will take over your world. Every jam on this tape rules and if they've got any left, you should email the band ASAP to get one.

I told you, the French are really fucking killing it. Despite the handful of tracks that took a while to get into, Sick of Love offers up some of the greatest, catchiest garage pop jams of the year. I'm so in love with this tight little Paris garage rock scene. I'm probably just going to move to there and become a mega-groupie. Also, most under-appreciated record of 2010? I think so.

Then there's that crazy Inverted Cosmos party and I'm sure if I had money to get in and more money for acid, it would rule so much. Then there is Xray Eyeballs tearing up the Cake Shop. That's the option that seems to rule the most. Xray Eyeballs are always a killer dance party and they've got some new songs lined up, too. It's probably gunna be cheap and you can still get fucked up & enjoy NYE and really dope show. Then when you're done, head to the Showpaper 42nd St Gallery and for $10 you can see Nonhorse, Guardian Angel, and PC Worship and meet your fate via Animal Zodiac Signs. The new year will be celebrated over and over again all night and you know the vibes will be killer compared to any other show/party happening. Plus it's actually affordable. Vibe killer$.

i'm probably not at as well versed in the realm of 7 inch releases as i should be, but here is the limited collection of things you should spend your life savings on:

**i don't write about music but i tried SO HARD 4u.

FUNGI GIRLS (Hozac) So these kids are super young and they still make perfect jams. Doldrums is one of my favorite tracks of the year, for sure. Lazy nostalgic vibes that speak of my own imprisoned life in the burbs of Strong Island.

WILD THING (Daggerman) I used the single Age Difference to bridge parts of Dateline interview with an online sex offender together and it was brilliant. Wild Thing are probably one of the greatest punk bands on the West coast. What could be better than a bunch of grungy nerdy dudes in leather jackets making perfect punk jams? Probably a Miley Cyrus sex tape.

ANGELO SPENCER (K) Spencer released the intense two part single, L'Argent. This might be my favorite release from K of 2010. Imagine Dustin Wong's Infinite Love dragged through a wild jungle by some exotic tribal men. That's pretty much what Angelo Spencer sounds like. It rules so much.

SLEEPOVERS (Hozac) The Sleepovers released three super rad sugar coated pop jams that kinda remind me of Hunx and His Punx, but maybe more poppy and more surfy. What if you were having a sleepover for your girl scout troop in Munchkinland? That's probably what this sounds like.

TONSTARTSSBANDHT (Psychic Handshake) Layered fuzz and distorted instruments laced with delicious echoing vocal harmonies. Honestly nothing beats the gritty pop vibes of Midnite Cobras, although I'm a Welsh Super is pretty dope, too. Ugh love the vocals on this soooo much.

TITUS ANDRONICUS (XL) Right before the Monitor was released, XL released a 7" for one of the most incredible singles of 2011, Four Score and Seven. I remember literally peeing myself as soon as this was posted on their myspace. Now I think of the epic moment when the band headlined Webster Hall with Free Energy and it was the most magical, beautiful, thing in the entire world. I remember Amy's silhouette against the cheesy starry backdrop of the venue while she played the violin solo and I had the craziest chills and I think I started balling. Wait, I might be making that up. Does Amy even have a solo there?!

FERGUS & GERONIMO (Hardly Art) Dude the cover art on this is awesome & rules so much. Fergus & Geronimo were one of the greatest and funnest bands that I saw during CMJ. Soul pop? Who knows. Never Satisfied is the catchiest pop jam and you should be stoked / excited for their LP coming out in like three weeks! Shitttt son!

FRESH & ONLYS (Hozac) Unfortunately, I don't own this own and I've only listened to it a few times in the studio, but it totally kills any track on Play it Strange or August In My Mind. If you're part of the Hozac Hookup Klub, you are one lucky asshole. It brings out the rougher side of the Fresh & Onlys, something I wish Play It Strange had more of. I would do anything to get this. I WILL GIVE YOU MY LIFE SAVINGS, ASSHOLE. UGH so jealous.

BABIES (Wild World) CAROLINE RULES SO MUCH. I remember listening to this and thinking it was instrumental since the song starts with almost a minute of warm guitar melodies strung together with tambourine heavy percussion, but then Cassie Ramone's vocals explode over the instruments into this epic moment of Carolining. It's soooo good.

SPIDER BAGS (Bull City) Spider Bags are probably one of the greatest most underrated bands of our generation. Maybe there's something brilliant about a band not taking advantage of the world wide web. Besides avoiding the world wide web, Daniel McGee is a master at making really great southern soaked rock jams. Dog In The Snow is perhaps rougher and faster than anything they've released thus far, but it rules & I hope the band continues to push their sound in this direction. Spider Bags 4lyfe.

BEETS (Captured Tracks) "This band sounds like they'd be fun drunk." -Mommy Rubbles. I'm seriously obsessed with the Beets and everything they've released pretty much rules. Locomotion was recorded by one of the dudes in Woods and JB Townsend of the Crystal Stilts plays some of the sweet guitars you'll hear. Both are pretty rad party/dance jams. You'll dig it.

VIVIAN GIRLS (Wild World) The Chantels cover on the B side is probably one of my favorite Vivian Girls tracks ever. I'm not even into the Vivian Girls, but the vocal harmonies on this track melt my big juicy heart.

DARLINGS (Famous Class) So I originally thought this was part of an EP, but it's actually just a super limited edition 7" that Famous Class just released. Big Girl is a super catchy pop jam that kind of reminds me of Weezer in a really good way. Can't wait for another full length from these Brooklyn babies.

NATURAL CHILD (Infinity Cat) The one and only Popjew kept raving about these kids and it all made sense when I saw them at DBA. The dudes are pretty much the most rock and roll thing about music right now. Does that even make sense? Maybe totally bad ass works better. I mean the first track on the A side opens with "I don't wanna fuck you, but I've got to" and finishes with "I just wanna smoke crack with my friends." Straight garage rock with sick piano solos and dope lyrics. How can you beef? (PS. This was a second pressing!)

SHIMMERING STARS (Almost Musique) East Van Girls is the dreamiest nostalgic surf pop track that you'll ever hear. The second track on the B side is a slow jam, but one that melts your heart sweet harmonies and hazy dazing guitars.

SEX CHURCH (Hozac) OMG Sex Church. The hardest, rawest, mmmmm you can possibly imagine. They put out a 7" in 2009 that was one of my favorite things in the world, but this still retains the same terrible bite that Dead End has. Sex Church is probably the creepiest, slimiest, dirtiest thing about rock and roll.

NYMPHETS (S/R) I just recently stumbled upon the Nymphets, so when I found their 7" chilling at the store, I ate that shit up. It's all too short, but every second rules. The first side is a sweet slow jam about love that screams repetitive lines with sticky angst that will have you easily chiming in. The b side is a faster, rawer, straight punk jam that kind of reminds me of some UK twee pop band from the 80's, but on speed. A shit ton of it.

CRYSTAL STILTS (Slumberland) I'm pretty sure Crystal Stilts haven't released a single bad song. Even their holiday jam ruled. Shake The Shackles has more of a pop vibe than other things they've released, but Magnetic Moon kind of has that creepy vibe that I love about the band. Magnetic Moon is easily one of the best tracks of the year with eerie haunting vocals suspended in a cloud of thick haze woven with spooky synths and tambourine heavy beats.

FEELING OF LOVE (Avant!) Words really can't describe how much I love this band. Too many feelings. Of love? This 7" just has more insanely perfect bluesy garage numbers laced with fuzzy guitars and droning synths covered in hazy screeching vocals. The A side is reminiscent of the trance inducing vibes of Women's Public Strain, but with a rougher edge. Totally worth the exotic shipping cost! Favorite band of 2010? Yupp.

INDIAN WARS (Bachelor) If You Want Me is a speedy reverb intoxicated garage jam. Fast gritty guitar melodies entangled with noisy muddled vocals result in something loud and shameless but insanely infectious. Carol Anne is less overwhelming than If You Want Me, but still wins my heart over with the nostalgic pop vibes. Comanche Killer feels like haunted cowboy ghost town from the West. Every track pretty much rules.

RIP Ariel Panero - The genius who pushed the limits of show spaces and booked some of your favorite bands on ships afloat the Hudson and one in of the oldest churches in Manhattan, resurrected Jim Jones of the Diplomats to perform at DBA, and somehow ended up booking Erykah Badu's record release party in the basement of Damon Dash's apartment building.
Todd P - The man behind the effort in organizing MtyMx, a post SXSW DIY music festival in Mexico.
Nicholas Gazin - Maybe one of my favorite Showpaper covers of 2010. Also has incredible taste in music.
Underwater Peoples - Best label. Best compilations? Best best best Pill Wonder. Best Summer showcase. Best.
The Eskalators - Probably one the largest bands in NYC, still manages to round up the troops and play pretty awesome shows every time. Hello Hillstock, the only cool music festival-ish thing that happens in NYC.
Huma Babha - Well known sculptor who had the sickest show in NYC with her drawings / photography. Soooooo amazing.
Joseph Joepaper Ahearn - The man who never sleeps, at least I don't think so. For some reason, I correlate him with epic dance parties involving some form of the pancake. And of course, Showpaper!
Shea Stadium - Stepped up the game this year for sure. Always the sickest time, best bands, warm vibes.
Amy Andronicus Klein - One of the most kick ass ladies in indie rock; guitarist and violinist of Titus Andronicus and in her own punk band Hilly Eye and has yet another musical guise as Solanin. Brilliant writer and keeps the Riotgrrl feminist vibes alive.
Rachel Popjew Coleman - Books the best bands, won the glorious title of being the Worst Cook in America and went on an adventure across America to enjoy punk shows and beer.
Neil Fridd - Mastermind behind TPDR! Also the mastermind of creating the coolest spaces with mind blowing decorations and props. (insane quilted parachutes, crazy costumes, dancing Christmas trees, crazy dancing holiday lawn decorations).
Pelly Twins - Two college kids taking the world by storm with their writing and interest in local DIY scenes. These amazing twins have garnered spots in the CMJ New Music Report, Spin, Wall Street Journal, Altered Zones, and much more! They organize shows, keep college radio vibes alive, interview celebrities, etc.

Back in summer of 2009, Air Waves pretty much ruled the world, or at least Brooklyn. Whether or not I intended on seeing them, they were everywhere, like midget terrorists disguised as garden gnomes. Never actually posted a title that wasn't relevant, but this is too great a song name to pass on. BAZOOKA is a really great punk band hailing from the same Athens rock scene as the great Acid Baby Jesus. I listened to them a while ago and was pretty into it, but their new demo rules so hard and is so much greater than their older stuff. HOZAC WHERE U AT BOI? Anyway, I'm actually posting a track today and it's kind of strange because I've actually written some words, too. Feeling a bit uncomfortable by my slightly more advanced blogging tactics. Anyway, you should hound these kids for their demo / EP thing and listen to I Want to Fuck All The Girls In My School because it's the raddest song. I'm crying I feel so good right now.
